Digital Mammography with CAD
Breast cancer will affect an average of one in eight women sometime in their lifetime. Mammograms play a central part in the early detection of breast cancer because they can detect changes in the breast that may be early signs of cancer, but are too small or subtle to be felt. Digital mammography use computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, and transmitted and stored just like computer files.

Digital mammogram is very much like having a conventional screen-film mammogram. Both film-based and digital mammography use compression and x-rays to create clear images of the inside of the breast.

Unlike film-based mammography, digital mammograms produce images that appear on the technologist's monitor in a matter of seconds. There is no waiting for film to develop, which can mean a shorter time spent in the imaging suite.

The Benefits of Digital Mammography:
  • Independent studies report that digital mammogram expects a reduction in "false positives."
  • Digital mammography is "film-less", therefore, expediting procedures and improving patient care through reduced procedure time.
  • Studies have also shown that digital mammogram is better than film screening for women under the age of 50, women of any age who have very dense breasts, and women who are pre or peri menopausal.
  • Images are analyzed on high resolution monitor enhancing visualization of structures in breast, stored electronically and hard copies can be produced when needed.
  • This new technology combines CAD (Computer Aided Detection) which highlights abnormal spots on mammogram (essentially providing a second read by the computer) thus, increasing sensitivity and supplementing radiologist's observations.
  • Identical feel to conventional screening mammography from a patient's perspective.
  • Significantly reduced procedure times without the need to develop films for needle wire localization procedures and for other breast procedures such as ductograms.
